Benefits of Sports Massage and Why Athletes Prefer it During Olympics

This is Why Athletes Prefer Massage During Olympics

Did you know? Nearly 30 to 60 percent of marathon runners and athletes report pain due to severe muscular cramps

Vigorous physical activities occurring during sports can increase muscle tension in the body tissues. Overexertion of muscles can also lead to severe muscle pain, tissue injuries and lesions that can directly affect the performance of an athlete.  Post exercise stretching, light exercise, or topical pain killer creams are some of the strategies proposed to alleviate muscle pain. However, none of these treatments can completely reduce the pain and soreness caused due to excessive physical activity.

Massage has been a choice of therapy for treatment of various illnesses and injuries for thousands of years. Physical therapists who specialize in sports medicine believe that sports massage plays an important part in the life of any athlete whether they are injured or not. Massage therapy can improve performance, reduce pain, prevent injury, encourage focus, and shorten recovery time.

Some important physical and psychological benefits of massage therapy in athletes are described further.

Physical Health Benefits

1. Improves Flexibility

Highly stressed muscle loses its capacity to relax. This makes the muscles very stiff which leads to reduced flexibility. A stiff or a less flexible muscle is more prone to injuries such as muscle pulls and tears. Furthermore, a stiff muscle restricts blood flow, which often causes pain. A regular routine of massage therapy is very effective in combating these effects of heavy exercised muscle. In addition since massage relaxes muscle, it could also help to enhance joint flexibility.

2. Reduces Pain

Delayed-Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) is the most commonly reported problem by the athletes. It refers to the muscle soreness and pain that develops few hours after a vigorous activity or unfamiliar exercise move. It mainly results from stressing the muscle tissue beyond what it is accustomed to. Experts believe that such soreness develops as a result of microscopic damage to muscle fibers involved in the action.  DOMS actually occurs as a result of the repair process that develops in response to microscopic muscle damage. However, the pain and soreness can be severe enough to interfere with athlete’s performance. Massage therapy is popular and possibly effective therapy for reducing such pain and soreness. The mechanical pressure applied during massage decreases neutrophil margination (the process that causes inflammation and pain), thereby reducing DOMS.

3. Reduces Muscle Strain

A muscle strain is a common type of sports injury. It refers to the damage caused to the muscle fiber or the other fibers that attach the muscle to the bone. If corrective measures are not taken, it can significantly affect the performance. Experts suggest that sports massage can prove to be a preventive strategy to avoid muscle strain.

4.Prevents Muscle Cramps

Exercise-induced muscle cramps are common and can occur during any type of sports. Muscle cramps are thought to be caused due to imbalance of electrolyte caused due to profuse sweating during vigorous activities. The depletion of important electrolyte causes sensitization of nerves. The muscle cramps can be severe enough to take an athlete out of competition. Massage can relieve muscle tension, stretch tight ligaments and reduce stiffness in muscles.

5. Promotes Better sleep

It is very important for the athletes to get adequate rest and sleep to have good physical and mental health. A satisfactory sleep at night helps the brain to prepare itself and get ready to function well the next day. Massage therapy can help the athletes to have relaxed body and mind to get a good night’s sleep. This can also positively affect their performance.

Psychological Benefits

1. Reduces Stress and Anxiety

Massage therapy is known to reduce levels of “cortisol” the stress hormone, and increase levels of dopamine which actually regulates our emotion. Many athletes have a stressful schedule that allows very little time for relaxation. Massage therapy can help the sports person to get the much needed mental relaxation.

2. Improves Focus

Many sports activities such as golf or gymnastics demand a large degree of attention and focus on goal. Massage therapy is known to produce calming effect and improve mood that can help to have better concentration.

3. Recovery from competition stress

The athletes have to get into competitive mood during each performance. Although, it’s a healthy competition with fellow participants, it can create a stressful situation. A relaxing massage after the performance can help the participants to recover from stress of competition

When Should An Athlete Take a Massage?

Experts suggest that massage therapies taken sporadically may not show similar benefits as those taken regularly. For maximum benefits sport massage should be applied at once every week or once in every two weeks.

Pre-event Massage

It is recommended to schedule a pre-event massage three to five days before, so as to give the body enough time to recover and be fully rested. The aim of a pre-event massage is to warm the muscles and improve the blood flow.

Post-event Massage

Post-event massage should be scheduled after 48 to 27 hours of an event. This massage is usually done with the aim of improving circulation, lymph drainage and reducing muscle tension.

The Untold History and Benefits of Traditional Thai Massage

Did you know Thai Massage is as effective as a pain relieving medication Ibuprofen? Thai Massage is a dry massage therapy that is performed using different compressing and stretching actions that are similar to those used in Yoga. Thai Massage can benefit almost every organ in your body. This article gives some interesting information on origin of this effective therapy and its health benefit that you probably were not aware of.

Thai Massage Therapy

The origins and history

Thai Massage Founder Thai Massage Founder Jivaka Kumar Bhaccha Thai Massage is an ancient therapy that has been practiced in Thailand for thousands of years. It is believed that Thai Massage was developed more than 2500 years ago by Jivaka Kumar Bhaccha (   Shivago Kompara ) a friend to the Buddha who had tremendous knowledge of medicine. Shivago is believed by most Thai healers to be the inventor of Thai traditional medicine. He is also referred to as the ‘Father Doctor” and the Thai healer practice the ethics of giving thanks to the Father Doctor before and after massage.

The experts and researchers also report that Thai medicine is believed to have “Rural” and “Royal Traditions. The rural traditions seem non-scholarly and rely on informal methods of education. The “Rural” tradition of healing seems to be passed down to generations through some secret code transmitted orally from the teacher to its pupils. On the other hand, the Royal tradition of Thai medicine is believed to be developed at the royal court and shows influence from India, China, the Muslim world. It seems to have a great influence from the Ayurvedic tradition from India.

Although the evolution of techniques and practices has happened in Thailand, the origin of Thai Massage can be actually traced to India. Its yoga philosophy is another reason to believe that this therapy has its roots in Ancient India.

The Principles of Thai Massage

Thai Massage is very different from the other massage therapies that usually involve tissue manipulation. It is a dry massage therapy and does not use any oils or lotion. Instead it is performed using deep compressing, rhythmic pressing, and stretching actions. The pressure, tension, and motion or vibration movements used during massage improve regional blood circulation. The Thai Massage is performed using different body parts such as palm, thumb, fingers, forearm, elbow or even feet.

Thai Massage used a variety of yoga like stretching positions that is believed to cause its therapeutic effects. Thai massage is based on principles of correcting the energy balance through the body. The basic principle of Thai Massage is to start with from the extremities of the body (laterally), work towards the core of the body (medially), and then back to the extremities. This ensured the flow of energy though the energy channels called meridians, and also improve blood circulation throughout the body.

Tiredness and Low Energy: Are You Eating The Right Food?

Is it Right Food

Do you see the marathon runners and wonder where do they get the stamina and energy from?

If you ask yourself, do you think you can reach the office on the 8th floor on time if there was no elevator? In today’s modern world it is very easy to see young people complain of tiredness, low energy and stamina. Most of us cannot run, jump or even exercise for more than 30 minutes without grasping for breath. How did we come to this stage, when our forefathers could actually walk for distances carrying heavy loads every day without any tiredness?

It is natural to get tired after a heavy physical work that needs high energy expenditure. However, we tend to get tired even after a little physical exertion such as climbing stairs or standing for long hours. Find out why you get tired physically when in mental stress. Before, we move on to make any conclusions about our physical inabilities causing tiredness, lets divert our attention to some other aspect of our lifestyle. Did you know that poor diet can also lead to low energy and stamina? Here are 6 dietary habits that could be hampering your energy and stamina.

Skipping Meals

skiping meals

Many people have this common misconception that skipping meals can reduce their calorie intake and help to lose weight. However, skipping meal is an extremely unhealthy habit. Without adequate supply of calorie at frequent intervals, body feels low on energy. Since the blood sugar levels drop, you may feel mentally exhausted or tired.

Eating Processed Food

Eating Processed Food

Processed foods are packed with salt, sugar and preservatives. Studies have reported that consumption of diet that contains too much added sugar especially the artificial sweeteners can make your lethargic.

Junk Foods

Junk-Foods

High calorie foods that contain too much of saturated fats tend to slow the functioning of brain.

More Than 4 Cups of Coffee in Per Day

benifits of coffee

Caffeine is a brain stimulant, but only when consumed in moderate quantity. Clinical evidence suggests that more than 4 cups of coffee in a day is hazardous to health. Coffee stimulates the adrenal glands to produce adrenaline which prepares your body to get into “flight or fight” situation. However, the body does not need to get into this mode while you are just sitting at your desk and sipping coffee. So, the adrenaline in the body remains unused at this situation, however, it affects the body later and drops the energy levels.

Too much Alcohol Consumption

Too much Alcohol Consumption

Many people are misinformed that one glass of drink can help them forget tensions and get good sleep. However, alcohol actually raises the levels of epinephrine, a stress hormone that can result in night time awakenings. Disturbed sleep at night can lead to tiredness and lethargy during the day. In addition, alcohol can affect the adrenal glands and lead to adrenal fatigue.

Restrictive Eating

Restrictive Eating

People have different likings and choices for food items. Furthermore, the popularity of diet plans such as low-fat, low-carbs, raw foods etc. leads to consumption of very specific food classes. Our body needs right amount nutrition from all food groups such as good fats, vitamins, carbohydrates, protein etc. as energy sources. However, restrictive dieting makes the body deprived of important nutrients and can lead to low energy, lethargy and tiredness.

Missing Iron-Rich food

Iron is an essential micronutrient that carries oxygen throughout the body. Deficiency of iron can make you look pale, have low energy and stamina.

The stimulation of reflex points on our feet provides relief from stress, reduces pain perception and causes certain physiological changes in the body that helps to get rid of fatigue and tiredness.

Why Do You Get Physically Tired When in Mental Stress?

Mental Stress

A new study performed by researchers of Indian-origin is all set to answer your questions. You might have experienced this often. When we do some mental activity such as studying or working on a report that needs a lot of concentration, we tend to feel extremely tired physically. And, this makes us wonder why do I feel tired when I was only stressed mentally?

Ranjana Mehta, assistant professor at the Texas A&M Health Science Centre School of Public Health conducted a small study to analyse the co-relation between mental stress and physical fatigue.  The study found that when we get involved in mental and physical tasks at the same time, some specific areas, called prefrontal cortex (PFC) are activated in our brain.  This can causes our body to get tired or fatigued much sooner than if we had done only a physical work.

During this study the researchers simultaneously monitored the brain and muscle function. The findings suggested that when we do mental and physical work at the same time the oxygen supply to the brain gets divided, which may accelerate the development of physical fatigue.

If you notice, most of the time we do physical and mental work together using both the body as well as the brain. For e.g., travelling to attend an important meeting.  Considering this fact it is very likely for a working professional who faces physical as well mental stress each day to develop physical fatigue.

Why fatigue is hazardous to health?

Fatigue is Now Recognized As a Serious Disease

2200256943_f66a0540d4_o

Have you been taking your feelings of constant tiredness very lightly so far? It’s time to take some action because fatigue is now recognized as a disease than just a symptom.

We often tend to ignore the demands of our body as the professional and social demands seem far more important to us than our health. Although at times we clearly feel the need to give some time to our body and mind to relax, our hectic and stressful lifestyle does not allow that. Fatigue mainly presents with feeling of weariness, constant tiredness, or lack of energy and can arise due to biochemical changes that occur in the body. When ignored, the symptoms can get worse and turn into a condition medically known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Some people also develop a condition called Adrenal Fatigue and report constant tiredness, difficulty getting up in the morning, and need for stimulants to stay awake.

Since there is no definitive test or diagnostic criteria to define fatigue, people who suffer from it remain undiagnosed and those who report these symptoms are often tagged as complainers. In fact, some medical professionals too consider symptoms of fatigue just psychological and not physical. However, with the new report released by Institute of Medicine in February 2015, fatigue will be taken more seriously as a disease that has mental as well as physical consequences.

As per the new criteria the Chronic Fatigue Syndrome will now be known as Systemic Exertion Intolerance Disease, or SEID for short.

The SEID will be diagnosed based on symptoms given below,
• Profound fatigue lasting at least six months
• Feeling extremely exhausted after even minor physical or mental activity
• Constant tiredness
• Unrefreshing sleep
• Memory problems

Many people do not realize that they actually are facing a chronic illness until it starts showing some of its complex consequences on body. Fatigue is for real and you need to take action to overcome it, before it reaches a serious stage. Relying on stimulants is not a healthy solution. You need to find out a healthier solution that gives long term benefits. Clinical studies suggest that massage therapies such as Thai Massage and Foot Reflexology Massage can reduce the levels of stress hormones and increase beneficial hormones, thereby energizing you.

Four Fountains De-Stress Spa offers ANTI-FATIGUE PROGRAMME   that can help you to overcome your tiredness and fatigue through Thai Massage, Foot Reflexology Massage and Aromatherapy Massage.

6 Benefits of Foot Reflexology Beyond Pain Relief

Foot Reflexology Pain Relief Treatment
As per one recent study, nearly 13 out of 100 officer goers in India report foot or ankle pain. Factors such as walking for long distances, inappropriate footwear and regular use of high heels puts too much pressure on the tissue and cause foot pain. Foot Reflexology is undoubtedly one of the best therapies to opt for, when you have an aching foot. But did you know that when you take foot massage it shows its benefits beyond just relieving your foot pain? As per the reflexology theory, there are reflex points on the feet corresponding to all parts of our body. Thus, massaging the right reflex points on the feet can provide relief to another body part. Here are 6 reasons why you should go for regular foot reflexology even when you don’t have a foot pain.

Improves Vision
vision
Stimulation of some specific reflex points on the feet can actually help to relieve eye and face conditions for many people. The reflex points that correspond to eyes lie below the three middle toes. Stimulating these points is thought to allow the eyes to perform better.Foot Reflexology can be helpful to manage tiredness and strain caused to eyes due to stress. Foot Reflexology has been also been proven to reduce intraocular pressure as seen with conditions such as glaucoma.

Improves Brain Health

Brain
As per the reflexology theory, the area under the big toes is co-related to the brain. There is not enough research to support the hypothesis that Foot Reflexology can stimulate the brain. However, it has shown to improve brain health through improvement in oxygen supply to the brain.

Reduces Fatigue

Tired

The stimulation of reflex points on the feet causes certain physiological changes in the body that helps to get rid of fatigue and tiredness. It is thought to be associated with decrease in cortisol levels thereby reducing stress and fatigue.

Lowers Blood Pressure

Foot Reflexology improves blood circulation throughout the body and thus reduces high blood pressure. In one study the scientists found that Foot Reflexology session administered twice a week for 6 weeks showed reduction of triglycerides (fats) along with blood pressure. This shows Foot Reflexology may have a possible role in prevention of heart disease.

Accelerates the Excretion of Waste

Foot Reflex Points

It is well acknowledged that stimulation of reflex points on the feet can effectively improve blood and lymph circulation, which can accelerate the excretion of waste.

Reduces Anxiety

Thai Massage Improves Physical Fitness in Soccer Players, Reports New Study

A recent study reveals that whole body Thai Massage applied for 30 minutes shows significant improvement in physical fitness in players compared to simply taking rest to recover from fatigue.

Vigorous physical activities occurring during sports can increase muscle tension in the body tissues. Overexertion of muscles can also lead to severe muscle pain, tissue injuries and lesions that can directly affect the performance of an athlete. Post exercise stretching, light exercise, rest, or topical pain killer creams are some of the strategies proposed to alleviate muscle pain. However, none of these treatments can completely reduce the pain and soreness caused due to excessive physical activity.

Massage is frequently used as warm-up and recovery techniques during sports competitions for athletes. Since soccer is one of the sports that require a variety of physical fitness in players for competitions, a team of scientist from Thailand decided to determine the effects of Thai Massage in soccer players.

For their study, the researchers selected 34 soccer players who were randomly divided in two groups to either receive Thai Massage or take rest to recover from body soreness and pain after the performance. Players in Thai Massage group received 30 minutes of massage on their shoulder (5 minutes), back (5 minutes), arms (10 minutes), and legs (10 minutes), where as the other group was instructed to rest for the same period of time.

Following the massage or rest, the researchers determined the physical fitness in players through tests such as sit and reach (flexibility), handgrip (strength), 40 yards technical (agility),50-meter sprint (speed), sit-ups, push-ups (muscles endurance). It was found that players who underwent Thai Massage showed significant improvement in all of the physical fitness test where as resting only improved flexibility.

This study showed that a single session of Thai Massage could likely provide improvements in physical fitness and flexibility in soccer players. This could be because Thai Massage involves a large variety of stretching movements that increase flexibility, release muscle tension, and help the body’s natural energy to flow more freely. Most importantly, it enhances the circulatory system. It is believed that Thai Massage produces similar effects as stretching exercises in yoga. Read benefits of Thai Massage

Ananya, a 41 year old mother of two children works in a software company. After winding up office-work late in the evening, she finds it really difficult to take charge of all her household responsibilities due to lack of energy.

Suresh and Ananya represent many of those who spent most of their waking time either working, travelling or in other routine household work.  In today’s turbulent and competitive economic conditions health often takes a back seat for many of us. Long work hours, meetings around the clock, frequent phone calls, and never ending work pressures allows very little or no time for relaxing. You may look and act relatively normal, however, suffer from a general sense of unwellness or gray feelings. This feeling of weariness, tiredness, or lack of energy is called fatigue. Some people suffer from another serious form called adrenal fatigue. People who suffer fromadrenal fatigue often have difficulty getting up in the morning, suffer from lack of energy and have to constantly rely on some stimulants like colas or coffee to stay alert and awake.

Fatigue mainly results from some biochemical changes that occur in the body. Unhealthy lifestyle with poor diet, lack of sleep and rest, too much pressure at work, stressful jobs, etc. increases the chance of developing adrenal fatigue. Overall, a very stressful lifestyle that allows no time for mental and physical rest can lead to fatigue. Four Culprits of Low Work Productivity You Should Not Ignore

Work-Stress

Work stress has become a major reason of low work productivity in many organizations. Research suggests that employees who are stressed are more likely to show poor engagement, high absenteeism and be less motivated at work. This causes a significant impact on the corporate sector in terms of high attrition, high healthcare costs/premiums and low work productivity.

Many employees blame low interest in their job, poor management team, conflicts between co-workers, or even lack of direction for their lack of performance. However, the root causes could be very personal and related to one’s health. Did you know that lack of adequate sleep, mental conditions such as anxiety or some pain disorders can lower your work performance? Here we have listed some statistics from Indian workforce and how health condition can actually be the real culprits of your low work productivity

Pain

Pain is the most common medical problem experienced by general population.

  • As per one study conducted in India, nearly 30 percent of production workers and 12 percent of office workers report more than seven days of sick leave due to chronic low back pain
  • More than 80 percent people using computers for more than four hours complain of back pain
  • Nearly 77 percent computer professionals report eye pain, headache, pain/stiffness in neck , shoulder and lower back pain

Lack of Sleep

As suggested by the sleep guidelines (from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute), adults need to sleep for about 7 to 8 hours daily. Adequate sleep is necessary for normal functioning of our brain. However, almost a third of Indian working professionals sacrifice sleep to fit in personal and work commitments. People who do not get enough sound sleep at night tend to be less motivated, irritated and lethargic during day. Since poor sleep is associated with decreased alertness, impaired judgment, and poor physical coordination, it can lead to low productivity.

Anxiety

It is fairly common for most of us to be worried about everyday issues. However, being constantly worried or anxious can eventually start taking a toll on our health. Accordingly to some statistics, nearly 55 percent Indians working in call centre report suffering from anxiety due to work stress. Too much worry may show physical symptoms such as racing heart, excessive sweating, restlessness, chest pain and sleeplessness. In addition, people with excessive anxiety have low energy levels and show poor concentration at work.

Fatigue

A stressful lifestyle leaves most of the working professionals mentally and physically tired.  The feeling of weariness, tiredness, or lack of energy is called fatigue, which can directly impact your ability to think and function normally. People who are fatigued show poor concentration and attention at work. Fatigue not only leads to lower efficiency at work, but also increases risk of accidents and injuries.

Work stress affects almost every employee in the corporate sector. It is not possible to change the scenario overnight, and avoid the stressors in your life. Modern lifestyle will always be full of turmoil and tensions. It’s you, who needs to take control of your health. Cigarette smoking or consuming too much coffee to overcome stress is extremely unhealthy. There are some great natural ways to de-stress yourself. Meditation, yoga practices, massage therapies, etc. are some of the healthy ways to manage your stress.

De-stress yourself by trying a relaxing Aromatherapy Massage and take the first step towards eliminating the culprits of low work productivity from your professional life.
